Cottage Cafe's Ghostly Get-Together

On October 26 and 27, 2013, the Cottage Cafe of Plover Wisconsin is hosting a "Ghostly Get-Together", where they will be conducting tours as well as presenting local psychics and a Question and Answer panel on the paranormal.  There will also be an on-site tattoo artist.  This event is to last from 2p until 9p, followed by an investigation hosted by (I am assuming) the Steven's Point Paranormal Investigators group, from 9:30p to 11:30p, and again from midnight to 2a.  SSPI has a website that can be found by going here.

All of that information is just a repeat of what is on their announcement, but what fun would there be in just posting a picture without adding something?

In itself and upon first glance, there isn't anything really special about the Cottage Cafe.  But just go a little bit deeper, and you'll find out that it used to go by a different name...  the Sherman House.  This is rather interesting to me because this was a place I was researching before.
Quote :
Plover, Wisconsin is located in the central region of the state and is historical town with many connections to the past. There is one house that ma have more of a connection to history than any other.... it seems that residents from the past are still living there.

The William Sowiak family lived in a small clapboard house in Plover from 1957 to 1982 and although they did experience some odd things during their residency, according to their son Mike, they were very reluctant to talk about it. It wasn't until the family moved out that the ghostly activity became public knowledge...and much more frightening.

In 1982, Tim and Louise Mulderink bought the 125-year old house and decided to turn it into a restaurant. They called it the Old Sherman House after one of Plover's early and influential residents, Eugene Sherman. Initially, the young couple was too busy with their extensive renovations to notice that anything odd was going on but once the bar opened for business, they realized they were not alone in the house.

Glass windows had a habit of shattering, glasses and plates would fly off bars and counters and explode in front of customers. Doors opened and closed by themselves and lights in the offices and the restaurant refused to behave normally. At one point, employees even complained that invisible forms brushed past them in some of the rooms.

Tim and Louise realized that they had a ghost. They decided to do some research into the history of the place and try to figure out why. They gathered information about the place and discovered that, although the only person to die in the house was an infant, they believed they had found the identity of the ghost. Most of the families who had lived in the house had been strict Methodists and very against the "evils" of alcohol. This was especially true of the Pierce family, who had lived in the house from 1903 to 1945. James Pierce had been a church deacon and an influential member of the local church. The Mulderink's believed that they may have offended James Pierce with the idea that they had turned his former home into a restaurant... and unwittingly turned his former bedroom into a bar!

The strange phenomena in the house continued and finally drove the Mulderink's out of the house.... they closed the restaurant after only a few years in business. Later on, the restaurant opened again, this time with the name "The Cottage House Restaurant". At this time, the status of the haunting is unknown.

The Old Sherman House Restaurant was located in Plover, Wisconsin.
The quoted text comes from Ghosts of the Prairies website, which can be found here.  A quick search on the internet will reveal pretty much the same thing.

At this moment, I myself cannot say if I'd be going or not.  I'd like to, I would just have to see.  I did reply to their posted email address, and asked when they needed reservations by, and if we could bring our own equipment;  I'll post their response when I get it.

With all this, do we have anyone else interested in going?  Definitely a carpool event: it's about 137 miles from my house.  Let me know!

The more I think about it, the more I read, the more I see of myself going to this.

I should point out that the stuff I've been reading isn't just the stuff you can find online, either.  After pondering a little bit, I went to my basement library and dug out my copy of Haunted Heartland: True Ghost Stories from the American Midwest by Beth Scott and Michael Norman (copy write 1985, 1991).  Starting on page 437 and ending on page 444 is the section dedicated to the Sherman House.  Apparently, there's a lot more going on there than glasses breaking and doors opening / closing: footstps, voices, tapping on the windows, lights turning on / off, dogs barking at unseen visitors...

I figure that with all the people coming back to the place there will either be an uproar of activity along the lines of "leave me alone," or there will be absolutely nothing because whatever entity might know that this will bring even more unwanted attention.

I would definitely like to get there earlier than later, with camcorders at the ready (and camera)!  Haven't heard from the people of Cottage Cafe yet, so I may try to ask the people of SPPI about bringing our own items.  If this trip does become a "go", it will have to gain its own thread in the Invetigations section.

Don't know if I mentioned it here or not (I know I did on Facebook), but thanks go to Wendy for finding this!

Okay, here's the thing:  the group SPPI are the owners of the Cottage Cafe.  That in itself is cool, it's rather nice to see that a paranormal group has that much interest in something to where they would purchase a reportedly haunted establishment.  Or, at least that is the impression I got from their email (it was signed Chris & Lisa, Cottage Cafe, SPPI.  That does not mean that SPPI made a separate email account for the purpose taking reservations...  even a quick check on the Cafe's Facebook page doesn't say much.  This very well can be true!

Irregardless, they wrote back.  We are more than welcome to bring our own equipment, but it was asked that we refrain from bringing Ouija Boards or the like; I replied that we would limit ourelves to just cameras and camcorders.

They also offered us a chance to hold our own investigation.

Will you be staying over night in the area? Being that you are a paranormal team you may not want to be with others who may not have done this before. We may have other options for you. One could be a Friday night investigation, or Sunday night.
My response?

Though I greatly appreciate your offer on allowing us to hold a Friday or Sunday night investigation, I would have to kindly decline, under the simple premise that you haven't met us yet.  If anything, I would like to treat this Saturday event as a preliminary; I would like to introduce ourselves to you and allow you the time to get to know us.  Also, this would be a great way for us to simply see your establishment and come up with a plan on how to go about things, a plan that would not only benefit us, but one that would make you comfortable.
I did tell them that there might be three or four of us attending, so no worries about missing a time slot or chance or anything.  I did ask that we be part of the first group, 9:30p to 11:30p, but that we'd be flexible.

As many of you probably already know, SPPI was not able to schedule us for the 9:30p to 11:30p time slot; instead, we are going to partake in the midnight to 2a showing.  This may alter some plans.

Steven and I are still going.  We've reserved a two bed room at the Point Motel.  Even though their website states they take online reservations, the contact email address does not work.  The person I talked to over the phone assured me that he would hold the room for me, and at $49.  Not a bad price!  The hotel is located about 10 miles from the Cafe.  It has a nice selection of mixed reviews (or not nice, depending on your disposition).  But it's cheap.  I'll call again later in the week to see what is all included (ie, fridge / coffee maker / microwave).

That reminds me, I was going to contact the Cafe to see if there was an schedule of events that day.

And, just for the sake of completeness, here is a newspaper article on the Ghostly Get-Together event.
