NLPRS Wish List Empty
PostSubject: NLPRS Wish List   NLPRS Wish List I_icon_minitimeMon Mar 24 2014, 14:12

I posted something on Facebook today regarding tax return season and how it's like Christmas for adults.  That got me to thinking of the things I'll be able to afford and acquire for our investigations, and with that, I thought I'd start a small thread on what I items I would like to get.  A few of these items are well above my planned budget, and I know that I won't be able to afford such things, but this is a wish list after all!

Just like with the Equipment thread (which can be found here), I'll be creating a separate entry for each item.  As these items are purchased, I'll be deleting them from this list, and adding them on the Equipment thread, but I don't see that happening too quickly, nor do I ever see this list disappearing completely; there will always be bills, and with anything, family comes first.

If there are any items you think would help with investigations, by all means go ahead and post them, or feel free to leave a comment about what has been posted so far.

{EDIT}

Oh, I should make a special note here. As with the pieces of equipment I have already purchased, I'll be looking for items that I can use for different occasions or situations. I cannot justify the cost of buying a specific item for specific circumstances... but an item that I could use for not only NLPRS, but for work and family functions? That will be at the top of the list. Sure, I may post a couple specific items, but the chances of getting that versus a multi-purpose one are slim.

Unless, of course, the price is something that can't be passed up.

I suppose the best way to start this off would be to post the most expensive thing on my wish list.  The best thing about this is that it is multi-functional: can be used for family or work functions, as well as NLPRS related.

What I would like to get is a cargo van.  A utility van would work as well.  Preferably one without windows on the side so that our image and logo can be painted on it like a big mural.

I'd set it up so that there'd be a workstation inside of it, complete with radio center and desk, maybe some cots.  Use it for traveling to investigations, both regular and over-night stays.  Make some sort of tent system that can use both the cargo area and the area immediately within the open back doors, maybe have it extend beyond, almost like one of those expandable campers.

This would be so nice.  Convenient, easy to set-up and manage!

What I also like about this is that, even if I get a cheap one, a good one but one that still needs general work, I can use it to teach my youngest how to fix or maintain vehicles.  This can also be used by either myself or the wife should either of our vehicles breaks down.

The next thing on this wish list would be an emergency battery pack, or a portable powerstation.  Whatever you call them or know them as, it's the same thing: a portable battery system with at least one outlet, used to provide emergency power to your electronic devices, with a battery life dependent on the amps used.  These are typically used for camping trips or power outages, with prices starting at about $120 for each unit.

This isn't the most expensive thing on my list, nor is it the second most expensive, but it will be seeing as how I'd want to purchase at least two of them... unless I can find some really good plans on how to make one (such as can be found on Youtube), but those require a good car battery, and well, might as well by a portable pack for the cost.

First, the multi-functionality of this item, or rather "how can I justify to the wife I need this".  Simple: what if the power goes out?  We now have a means to provide some power to our home, even if it is on a limited basis.  It'll be enough to run some lights, power some minor devices, charge USB equipped devices, and so on.  Good for an emergency.  These can also be used for camping, and again, used for the same purposes as that for an emergency power outage.

For NLPRS, what I'd be using these for is field investigations, to provide power to CCTV cameras.  Sure, a lot of our investigations would be within a private residence, where we might be able to use their power, but what about those times when we are in the field?  Where there is no readily available power source?  Our cameras will be fine, especially considering I have enough batteries for the camcorders and other cameras to last several (several) hours, but in order to use the DVR systems, we'd need a power supply.

...

Umm...  wait a minute.  NLPRS doesn't have a DVR system.  Ahh, move on to the next post, please.

A DVR surveillance system, one with infrared cameras, is a must.  This is going to be one of the easier items to get on this wish list, as I've already been price checking on a variety of websites and stores.

NLPRS Wish List 2013-010

This is essentially a closed monitoring system, primarily used for surveillance by companies and stores, and by private home owners, so that there can be a visual record of thefts or break-ins.

This really isn't so much a multi-use item.  You may argue that it could be used around the home, but let me let you in on a little secret: if a would be burglar were to see these, he may have the impression that you have something worth stealing.  After all, you have taken steps to protect something, right?  A house with no camera is an easy target, but a home with one says there's something valuable inside.

So then, what would I be using this for?  To set up either in the field (along with a power pack) or in a building to monitor rooms or locations in which team members aren't present.  All data is stored within an internal hard-drive, and all cameras can be watched simultaneously on a monitor while recording.

As an update to the wish list, and in looking at the previous entry this update is a long time coming, I can scratch off the portable power packs (please see our equipment list for details) and we are also just a week or two away from taking care of the vehicle: I'm in the process of acquiring a used U Haul box truck!

More details on that within the week. I hope.
